Gravina di Catania

Gravina di Catania is a city in the Province of Catania in the Italian region Sicily, with 26 271 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Gravina di Catania is located 14 km north of Catania on the southern slopes of Mount Etna. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and in the processing of various stones.

The neighboring municipalities are Catania, Nicolosi, Sant'Agata li Battiati and Tremestieri Etneo.

History

The exact founding year is unknown. 1646 was the then place the Principality of Valguarnera. The name is derived from the long-standing feudal lords, the Gravina di Catania.
