Gray-shanked douc

The gray -leg Douc ( Pygathrix cinerea) is a primate of the group of monkeys Slim ( Presbytini ). He was formerly considered a subspecies of the Rotschenkligen dresses monkeys.

Features

Gray Thigh dresses monkeys are like all the dresses monkeys relatively colorful. The head and back are gray, as well as the arms and legs. The hands and feet are black, the chest, the buttocks and tail white. The hairless area around the eyes and nose is orange on the cheeks are long, white hair. These animals can reach a body length 61-76 inches, the tail is as long as the body. With an average weight of 11 kg males are slightly heavier than females, weighing about 8 kilograms.

Distribution and habitat

Gray -leg clothes monkeys live in the central highlands of Vietnam ( provinces of Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Kon Tum, Gia Lai and Binh Định ) and possibly also in the eastern Laos. Their habitat is forests.

Way of life

Little is known about the life of this kind, it probably is largely consistent with that of the Rotschenkligen clothes monkey. Consequently, they are diurnal and live in groups of several males, females and the associated offspring. Their diet should consist mainly of leaves and the way of fruits and flowers, like all Slim monkeys they have a multi-chambered stomach for better utilization of food.

Discovery and threat

From 1995 to 1998 six males a previously unknown Kleideraffenart were seized by Vietnamese conservation authorities and taken to the Endangered Primate Rescue Center. The exploration of this new species was carried out by the Frankfurt Zoological Society under Tilo Nadler, the erstbeschrieb the type in 1997.

The distribution of this primate is dismembered, the greatest threat to the species is probably out of the progressive deforestation. The total population is estimated at 600 to 700 animals, the IUCN lists the gray Schenk leagues dresses monkeys as " threatened with extinction " ( critically endangered ).

In 2007, the WWF announced that more than 100 additional copies were found in a wooded area, which increases the chances of survival of the species.
