Graydon Nicholas

Graydon Nicholas ONB ( born 1946 in Tobique ) is a Canadian judge. Since 2009 he is the incumbent Vice Governor of the Province of New Brunswick and as such represents the head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, at the provincial level.

Biography

Nicholas is a member of the counting of the Maliseet Indians Tobique First Nation. After finishing school, he moved to Antigonish in order to study law at Saint Francis Xavier University. He continued his studies at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton and in 1971 was the first Native American who made a university degree in jurisprudence in the Atlantic provinces. In 1974 he graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo additionally as a master in social work from.

Then Nicholas worked for several years for the Union of the Indians of New Brunswick. He was from 1976 to 1980 and its chairman from 1980 to 1988 its president. In 1991 he was appointed as the first aboriginal judge of the Provincial Court of New Brunswick. In parallel, he was until 1999 a lecturer at St. Thomas University in Fredericton. Governor General Michaëlle Jean Nicholas sworn on 30 September 2009 as Vice- Governor of New Brunswick.
