Great Big Sea

Great Big Sea, shortly GBS, is a native of Newfoundland and Labrador Canadian folk - rock band. She is known for new interpretations of old folk songs from their marked by a long history of home.

Band History

The band was formed in 1991 with the following cast: Alan Doyle ( vocals, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin ), Séan McCann (vocals, bodhrán, guitar, tin whistle ), Darrell Power ( vocals, bass, guitar, bones ) and Bob Hallett (vocals, violin, accordion, mandolin, concertina, bouzouki, flute, bagpipes ).

In 2002, Darell Power withdrew from the group to spend more time with his family. On tour GBS were, among others, by Kris MacFarlane (2002, drums, accordion, guitar, backing vocals) and Murray Foster (2003, formerly of Moxy Früvous ) (bass, background vocals ) supported.

2001 GBS toured as the opening act of the Oysterband by Germany. In 2002 the band went on tour in Germany alone.

Great Big Sea was awarded the Entertainer of the Year Award at the East Coast Music Awards in the years 1996 to 2001. In 2001, she opted not to participate in order to let other bands a chance. Great Big Sea was also awarded for multiple Juno Awards, including Group of the Year in 1998 and as of the year 2005.

On 28 December 2006, the band gave a concert in St. John's, Newfoundland. This concert showed revenue of $ 24,000 CAN, which was donated by GBS at the Janeway Hospital.
