Great Market Hall (Budapest)

The Market Hall ( Nagy Vásárcsarnok ), officially Central Market Hall ( Központi Vásárcsarnok ) in Hungary's capital Budapest was built from 1894 to 1897 after plans by Samuel Petz. It is located in the IX. District, close to Freedom Bridge and the Corvinus University of Economics at the point where the little ring ( Kiskörút ) enlarges the Fővám tér.

Architecture

The basilica -like building with a nave and two transepts is based on a steel structure, which is clothed on the facade with colorful, glazed tiles of the Zsolnay porcelain factory. At the corners of the building are wide, heavy towers. Input on the Small Square is decorated with columns and figures. There used to be a channel of the Danube in the market hall to facilitate the delivery of goods. On three floors there are over 180 market stalls and shops, and two supermarkets. The upstairs take a souvenir shops, snack bars and a bistro.

By 1932, the Market Hall was the largest and most important market square in Budapest. Still today the hall of their architecturally is one of the shopping streets of the city and is visited by locals and tourists accordingly. The rooms can also be rented for events. In the basement there are fish stalls and aquariums.
