Great White Throne (mountain)

The Great White Throne

The Great White Throne ( Great White Throne ) is a mountain in Zion National Park in southwest Utah. It is a 2063 m high, bright monolith of Navajo Sandstone in Zion Canyon, which is often used as a symbol for the national park and is next to the Angel's Landing as the most famous mountain in the canyon.

The mountain is visible because of its height from many points of the park. Many park visitors prefer the shuttle bus which stops at the designated viewpoints. The best view of the Great White Throne has, however, from the top of Angel's Landing, which is accessible via a developed, but strenuous trail. Although there are no developed trails the Great White Throne up, the monolith is very popular with climbers. Some routes to the summit are usually locked, so those interested should first check with the Zion ranger station. For the night on the mountain a bivouac - authorization is required.

The name comes from the Great White Throne Methodist pastor Frederick Fisher from Ogden, Utah, from which also comes the name of Angel's Landing and the Three Patriarchs. Fisher was impressed by the monolith in 1916 so that he compared him to the throne of God.
