Greccio

Greccio is a municipality in the province of Rieti in the Italian region Latium, located about 1524 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 90 km north of Rome and 15 km west of Rieti.

Geography

Greccio is located in the Sabine mountains above the valley of the Velino. It is surrounded by oak forests to the highest point of the municipality, the Monte Lacerone ( 1204 m) range. It is a member of Mountain Community Monte Piano Reatino.

The nearby towns of Contigliano Cottanello, Rieti and Stroncone (TR ).

Traffic

Greccio is located on the Strada Statale SS 79 Ternana leading from Rieti to Terni. The community also has a station on the railway line Terni - Sulmona.

History

According to one legend Greccio to have been founded by Greek immigrants in antiquity. The first mention of it was, however, only in the 10th to 11th centuries. In 1242 it was conquered and destroyed by Frederick II.

Nativity Scene

Francis of Assisi, let the legend 1223 in Greccio the first time present the Christmas story in the form of a live nativity scene. This tradition is maintained to this day and presented the Christmas story between December 24 and January 6. At the site of the first performance of Francis of Assisi, a monastery was built.
