Grecco

Grecco is a village in western Uruguay.

Geography

It is located in the eastern part and there in sector 8 of the department of Río Negro in the Cuchilla de Navarro on the banks of the Arroyo Las Flores. To the south rises the Arroyo Chico Ramirez, while the source of the Arroyo Grande Ramírez is in a northeasterly direction. The only major settlement in the vicinity is Baygorria in the southeast on the territory of Nachbardepartamentos Durazno.

History

In 1870 the two Italian emigrants and brothers Juan and Natalio Grecco were here first settlers settled in the source area of the river. The former, however, returned in 1872 to his native country back. Juan Grecco, however, acquired 400 acres of land in this area and founded a family site. Here he put up his house, where he ran a shop. Over time, he divided his land among his ten children. This meant that eventually lived several families in the area in 1930. The establishment of a police station and a school followed. Law No 13,299 Grecco received on February 24, 1964 officially the status as " Pueblo " (village) awarded.
