Grechetto

Grechetto is a white grape variety which is predominantly grown in the Italian provinces of Lucca, Macerata, Perugia, Terni, Rieti and Arezzo in the regions of Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany. The name suggests a Greek origin. In Italy in the late 1990s brought an area under vines of 798 hectares. This variety provides a full-bodied wine with a nutty flavor that is often used in blends with other grapes. It is as part of the DOC - Wines grechetto Assisi, Assisi bianco, bianco di Torgiano, Colli Etruschi Viterbesi grechetto bianco, Colli Martani grechetto, Colli Martani Grechetto di Todi Colli del Trasimeno grechetto, Colli del Trasimeno bianco, bianco Colli del Trasimeno Vin Santo, Colli del Trasimeno bianco frizzante, Colli del Trasimeno bianco scelto, Colli del Trasimeno spumante classico, Colline Lucchesi bianco, Montefalco bianco, Orvieto, Orvieto classico, Orvieto classico superiore, Orvieto superiore, Valdichiana grechetto, Valdichiana bianco virgin frizzante, Vin Santo Montepulciano and Vin Santo riserva Montepulciano.

There is also a red variety grechetto Rosso.

There is, despite some on indicators showing Synonyms no relationship to the species Greco Bianco. In contrast, distant, according to the ampelographers Bruni affinities to the varieties Greco di Tufo, Greco del Vesuvio and Greca del Piemonte seem to exist.
