Greek Catholic Diocese of Cluj-Gherla

The Eparchy of Cluj- Gherla (Latin: Dioecesis Claudiopolitanus - Armenopolitanus Romenorum, rum. Eparhia de Cluj- Gherla ) is a diocese located in Romania, the Romanian Greek-Catholic church located in Cluj- Napoca. It covers the northwestern part of Transylvania.

History

Pope Pius IX. founded the bishopric Gherla, Armenopoli, Somes - Ujvár with the Apostolic Constitution Ad Apostolicam Sedem on December 19, 1853 from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Fagaras, which it was assumed as a suffragan.

In 1924 the headquarters of the diocese of Gherla to Cluj ( Kolozsvár ) was moved - hence the naming Diocese of Cluj- Gherla.

With the Apostolic Constitution Solemni conventione of 5 June 1930, the diocese was it from a part of its territory to the Diocese of Maramureş and adopted its present name.
