Greek legislative election, 2004

The parliamentary elections in Greece in 2004 was held on 7 March 2004. In choosing the 300 members of the Greek Parliament were re-determined.

The elections were won by Konstantinos Karamanlis and his party, the liberal- conservative New Democracy ( vd ). The competing Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK ) under its leading candidate Georgios Papandreou was unable to repeat the reign of Prime Minister Kostas Simitis it.

Suffrage and elective

In the Greek electoral law a three-percent clause applies. The voices of small parties, which may not exceed this hurdle, shall automatically be added according to the Greek electoral law in the distribution of seats of the strongest party, to facilitate formation of a government. In addition, for the strongest party, a simple majority of votes to gain a majority of 300 seats in parliament, so it does not have to be entered into a coalition to get an absolute majority.

In Greece, the publication of demoscopic election predictions is banned for 2 weeks before the election date. Therefore, so-called " by-election polls ," which will be published immediately after the polls closed from 19:00 clock, the first indicator of the possible election outcome.

In Greece, there is an elective for all Greek citizens over 18 years, an omission is however not pursued for several years. So the turnout in the parliamentary election in 2004 is around 79 percent. The combination of elective and Greek registration law, provides in every election for an increased travel volumes, there must be selected in the " origin ", which is often not coincide with the place of residence. Workers can get up to three days free, ferry tickets are financed to a large contingent of the major parties.

The election campaign

In January, the New Democracy was in the polls by 7% against the PASOK. After the election of Papandreou PASOK party leader caught up in the polls. The end of February was down to 3% of the projection of the New Democracy party. The election was thus a head-to -head race.

The highlight of the campaign was the traditional election rally in Athens. On the evening of March 4, Karamanlis was cheered by an estimated 200,000 followers. Having the final rally of PASOK took claim for themselves, on their final rally on March 6, twice as many supporters mobilized. None of the figures has been independently verified.

The party New Democracy ( ND ) was the clear winner of the election with 45.36 %, reaching an absolute majority of the seats in Parliament. This enabled it to govern alone.
