Green River is a town in the U.S. state of Utah on the banks of the Green River. 2006 the community had 947 inhabitants.

History

The place Green River originated in the fact that the American post here since 1876 used a ferry to transport mail across the Green River. This was also used by farmers to trade in livestock and also by the settlers treks, which then moved westward.

1883 the railroad came to the place which then consisted of three families. Originally, these three families came here to operate on the fertile banks of the Green River Agriculture and operate the ferry. Very quickly created a larger tent city railroad workers who were working on a bridge over the Green River, as well as the expansion of the railway line. The town became a supply point for the railway, to service the locomotives and as an overnight stop for travelers.

Today, the site and the location on Interstate I-70 has an important position as a location for a fuel stop and rest in the middle of the desert. Here are several gas stations, a KOA campground and several motels. Furthermore, there is also a small airfield and a connection to the Amtrack passenger transport network.

Green River Test Site

In 1964 in a large area in the desert near the small, then very populous place decimated the Green River test site. From 1964 to 1973, the U.S. Air Force launched among other 141 Athena rockets here.

The Air Force Base is now retired and available to civilians. You can still enter the launchers and the bunker in the desert.

On probably the most important is a cold water geyser, called Crystal Geyser on the banks of the Green River, approximately 8 km downstream of the town of Green River. This shoots at irregular intervals, a sulfur-containing water -fountain
