Greenbury L. Fort

Greenbury Lafayette Fort ( born October 17, 1825 French Grant, Scioto County, Ohio; † January 13, 1883 in Lacon, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1873 and 1881 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1834, Fort Greenbury came with his parents in the Marshall County, Illinois, where he attended the public schools and the Rock River Seminary. After a subsequent law degree in 1847 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started in Lacon to work in this profession. In 1850 he became sheriff. Two years later, he assumed the office of the Clerk of Marshall County. In 1857 he was District Judge. During the Civil War Fort served as an officer in the army of the Union. He rose to 1865 up to lieutenant colonel. After the war, he hit as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. In 1866 he was elected to the Illinois Senate.

In the congressional elections of 1872 Fort in the eighth constituency of Illinois was in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of James Carroll Robinson on March 4, 1873. After three re- elections, he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1881 four legislative sessions. In 1880 he renounced a new Congress candidacy.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives to Fort withdrew into retirement. He died on January 13, 1883 in Lacon, where he was also buried.
