Geography

History

Greene County was formed on December 13, 1819 from parts of the land cession of Choctaw Indians on 24 October 1816. It was named for General Nathaniel Greene, a hero of the American Revolution. The first county seat was Erie, which is now in Hale County. 1838 this was Eutaw. 1868 burned the courthouse and was completely destroyed.
