History

The land was formerly the home of the mutually warring Kickapoo and the Pottawatamie Indians. Later it was first occupied by the French. As a result, it came to the war between the French and the British, which won in the battle of Quebec.

The Greene County was formed on January 20, 1821 from parts of Madison County. It was named after Nathanael Greene (1742-1786), a general in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. At this time included the territories of the later Jersey, Macoupin, Morgan and Scott County to Greene County and still Edwardsville was the only city.
