Greene County (Pennsylvania)
The Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. In the census in 2010, the County had 38 686 inhabitants and a population density of 25.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Waynesburg.
Geography
The County is located in the extreme southwest of Pennsylvania on the west bank of the Monongahela River, one of the headwaters of the Ohio River; in the west and south it borders on West Virginia, the southern border is formed by the extension of the Mason- Dixon line. It has an area of 1,497 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers is water area. At the Greene County borders the following counties:
History
The Greene County was formed on February 9, 1796 from Washington County. It was named after Nathanael Greene (1742-1786), a general in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2010, lived in Greene County 38 686 people in 14,530 households. The population density was 25.9 inhabitants per square kilometer.
The racial the population was composed of 94.6 percent white, 3.3 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.0 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.2 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
In the 14,530 households lived statistically 2.52 per person.
19.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 64.8 percent were between 18 and 64 and 15.3 percent were 65 years or older. 48.5 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was $ 38,233. The per capita income was $ 19,832. 17.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
