Greene County (Tennessee)

Greene County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Greeneville.

Geography

The County is located in northeastern Tennessee, bounded on the southeast by North Carolina, is located in the north about 35 miles from Virginia and has an area of 1616 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Hawkins County, Washington County, Unicoi County, Madison County ( North Carolina), Cocke County and Hamblen County.

History

Greene County was formed on April 18, 1783 from parts of Washington County. It was named after Nathanael Greene, a major general in the American colonial army in the American Revolutionary War.
