Greenland Ice Core Project

The Greenland Ice Core Project ( abbreviated: GRIP ) was a multinational European project for the exploration of the Greenland ice sheet. In the years 1989 to 1992, the ice sheet was drilled from 3029 meters in central Greenland ( 72 ° 35 'N, 37 ° 38' W) to a depth where you came across rocky ground. The oldest parts of the ice core come from a depth at which the ice has reached an age of more than 200,000 years. The core can provide information on the ecology and climate history of the last 100,000 years or so, this is the area in which the core is undisturbed and clearly datable.

Was organized by the project of the European Science Foundation, the funding came from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Iceland, Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the European Union.
