Greenwich Line

The Greenwich Line is a short connecting route between London Bridge Station and the North Kent Line in London. The trains on the line are operated by Southeastern.

History

1833 approved a route from London to Greenwich by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. As target a continuous path was specified to Dover, but this failed due to financing problems. The line was taken as the first railway line in London under the wing of the London and Greenwich Railway in operation. The first section was on February 8, 1836 the one taken from the now-defunct breakpoint Spa Road and Deptford in operation, although since the middle of 1835 already wrong test trains. On December 14 1836 the tracks reached London Bridge, and on 24 December 1838, the line was extended to temporary terminus Church Row in Greenwich. Today's train station Greenwich was put into operation on 12 April 1840.

1873 Section Maze Hill was - Charlton taken as a branch line of the North Kent Line operational, five years later, the gap closure followed Maze Hill - Greenwich by tunnel crosses under the National Maritime Museum. The reason that Greenwich for 40 years remained terminus, was a dispute with the Greenwich Hospital on the curve.

1879 nor the station Westcombe Park was put into operation.

1926, the route was along with other routes as part of the electrification of the relation London - Dartford electrified with a DC voltage of 750 volts per conductor rail.

Operation

Monday to Saturday

Southeastern operates on Greenwich Line Monday to Saturday, the ten -minute intervals between the North Kent Line London and various stations:

  • London Cannon Street - London Bridge - Greenwich - Woolwich Arsenal - Dartford: half hour
  • London Cannon Street - Greenwich - Woolwich Arsenal - Slade Green: Quarter Hourly, of which every half hour from Slade Green via Lewisham and New Cross back to Cannon Street the weekday peak times trains run also the relation Gillingham - Charing Cross via Greenwich.

Sunday

As a result of the Sunday closure of Cannon Street station other stations will be approached:

  • London Charing Cross - Greenwich - Dartford: half hour
  • London Bridge - Woolwich Arsenal - Plumstead: half hour
