Greer County, Oklahoma

Greer County is a county located in the state of Oklahoma in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Mangum.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme southwest of Oklahoma and has an area of 1667 square kilometers, of which 11 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Kiowa County, Jackson County, Harmon County and Beckham County.

History

Greer County was formed in 1890 from parts of the northern state of Texas. It was named for John Alexander Greer, a deputy governor of Texas.

1860, the area in the southwest corner of Oklahoma, between the Red River, the northern arm of the Red River and the 100th meridian was incorrectly assigned to Texas. It was not until 1889, by the Supreme Court of the United States (U.S. Supreme Court ) decided that this area is again returned to Oklahoma.
