Greg Johnson (ice hockey)

Gregory C. Johnson ( born March 16, 1971 in Thunder Bay, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player who in his active period from 1988 to 2006 include for the Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators in the National Hockey League played. His brother Ryan Johnson was also a professional hockey player.

Career

Greg Johnson began his career as a hockey player in his hometown at the Thunder Bay Flyers, where he was active in the 1988/89 season in the Junior League United States Hockey League. With his team, he immediately won the Clark Cup, while he himself was elected to the USHL Forward of the Year. He was then in the second round selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1989 as a total of 33 players from the Philadelphia Flyers, for whom he never played, however. Instead, he attended from 1989 to 1993, the University of North Dakota, for their hockey team he played in parallel in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

In early 1993, gave him the Philadelphia Flyers from the Detroit Red Wings. For the Michigan team he was in the 1993/94 season his debut in the National Hockey League, as he came in parallel with seven inserts for its farm team Adirondack Red Wings of the American Hockey League. On January 27, 1997, he was released in exchange for the Swede Tomas Sandström at the Pittsburgh Penguins. In October of the same year the Penguins transferred him for the Finn Tuomas Grönman to the Chicago Blackhawks. Last played the former national team from 1998 to 2006 for the NHL rookie Nashville Predators. August 14, 2006 Johnson signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings, but for which he no longer was used, since it ended at the beginning of the season 2006/ 07 on 11 October 2006 his career as an active athlete.

Internationally

For Canada, Johnson took part in the junior level only at the U20 World Youth Championship in 1991, when he won the gold medal with his team. In the senior level, he stood in his country's squad at the 1993 World Championships and the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. At the Winter Games in 1994 he won the silver medal with his team.
