Greg Joly

Greg James Joly (* May 30, 1954 in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (defender) who played from 1974 to 1983 for the Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League.

Career

As a junior he played for the Regina Pats in the WCJHL with players like Clark Gillies. In 1974, he took with the Pats the Memorial Cup and played outstanding, so that he was elected Most Valuable Player of the Final Tournament. Impressed with the Washington Capitals selected him in the NHL Amateur Draft in 1974 with the first pick of the draft.

DC for the season 1974/75 they took him to the NHL and hoped to have brought with him the next star of her defense. An injury in the preseason threw him back and when he came in the form towards the end, he was injured again. The high expectations weighed heavily on his shoulders and this pressure he seemed unable to cope. After two seasons, the Capitals parted from him and sent him to the Detroit Red Wings.

The 1976/77 season he spent partly in the AHL farm team for the Springfield Indians. Until 1983, he played a solid role in the Red Wings, but was also repeatedly used in the Adirondack Red Wings in the AHL. In Adirondack he stayed another three years as one of the best defenders in the league, until he ended his active career in 1986.
