The Gregnitz ( sometimes one can also find the spellings Kregnitz or Krögnitz ) is one of the rivers of the Fichtelgebirge in northeast Bavaria and bring her water to Fichtelnaab and thus over the Danube to the Black Sea. From the source area to the mouth it lays about 11 km back, where it flows through the Bavarian administrative districts of Upper Franconia and Upper Palatinate and the districts Bayreuth, Wunsiedel and Tirschenreuth.

Bach name

In the population is called the Bach name " Gregnitz " dialect " Grangerz " spoken. A unique word description of linguists does not exist yet. The first written reference to the stream is in the boundary description of the stately forest of the viscount of Nuremberg from the year 1393 in the section Kösseine - Fichtelsee. Here appears the name " Crebenitz " or " Krebenitz ". In the boundary description of 1536, which concerned the then political territories Pfalz- Bavaria and the Markgrafentums of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, the boundary line exceeding the " Krednitz " is called.

In the maps of the Bavarian State Survey Office our Bach " Krögnitz " is called, what is wrong and should be changed to " Gregnitz " in new edition of the cards. Different spellings are also found in the older literature Fichtelgebirgshalle, now the single name " Gregnitz " is used.

The stream name is very old and should be of Slavic origin, more is not currently available to learn. All previous names interpretations are very vague and you miss it the first mention documentary. One might speculate that in the root word Gregnitz the term " border " is included. If the stream but early on a boundary line or has been for the demarcation drawn upon.

Source area of the Gregnitz

A source version of the origin of Gregnitz there is not. But we know where the origin of the stream is located: between the plate and the Seehügel in about 825 m above sea level. The boundary description of 1536 we found: " ... dodanenn the loe pass over the pechlein that genantt Krednitz that fleust auss the origin ... ". Today is called " origin " no longer the source area of the Gregnitz, because the stream has been derived already in 1608 in its upper reaches by an artificial trench. The hammer works in Fichtelbergbahn needed for their plants plenty of water, the factory owners could create the Fichtelseeweiher and initiated various watercourses from there. From this stream diversions and the Gregnitzursprung was affected and in the topographic map you can see the change in the flow direction. The deduced for Fichtelsee waters is called Lochbach.

Watercourse

East of the Ficht Elsees, in the nature reserve lake and Hüttenlohe near the Fichtelgebirge mountain road (B 303 / E 48) accumulate more water veins, forming a small watercourse which flows under the state road 2981. The stream flows around the east named after him Gregnitzhügel, through the high forest on Neuweiher over after Lochbühl ( Acc nail ) and nail. When Gregnitzbrücke with Nepomuk figure of Bach takes to the outflow from the lake Nagler ( Mühlweiher ) and leaves the place in a southerly direction. First, the creek flows through open countryside and before it comes to high forest, trees obstruct the watercourse, with a small lake landscape has formed. Felled trees and gnawed tree stumps are clear signs of the activity of the beaver. To the east of Beaver Dam are mighty rock walls, granite there was formerly mined. The bright core granite was known because of its special properties and the extraordinary resistance to weathering. Now the valley becomes narrower, it starts here the most beautiful and interesting part of the Gregnitztales. Wool Baggy shaped block accumulations or rock thresholds are irregularly on or next to each other in the stream bed. They are roaring washed by water or the water cascades down the valley. Depending on the season Gregnitz leads more or less water, according to the creek bed offers her a different wild and romantic sight. When Grünlasmühle (municipality fire (Oberpfalz ) ), which is first documented in 1630 called into the control books, the Gregnitz presented by floods than rushing water. Here they drove to 1914 two overshot, large wooden mill wheels in a Radstube and until 1940 the gates of a dicing saw. At the former castle estate Selingau (municipality Ebnath ) the Gregnitz falls into the Fichtelnaab. The stream of nail according Ebnath is accompanied by the marked trail, which is also a section of the Main- Danube - distance trail.

Saga

The trail through the Gregnitztal leads past a rock that is in the stream bed and two different, large circular depressions. This is the fabled Venice bowls! The Venetians have washed their gold here. The larger the well were placed and pounded the gold-bearing rocks. Sand and sand grains were then flushed with Gregnitzwasser, the gold remained in the granite trough lie. It is caused by the erosion hollows in the granite, as science has found, and it is a sparkle swirl hole that was created by the eroding river.
