Gregorio Mayans

Gregorio Mayans y Siscar ( born May 9, 1699 Oliva, † December 21, 1781 in Valencia ) was a Spanish jurist, historian, philologist, linguist and Hispanist.

Mayans studied law in Valencia and Salamanca. From 1723, he taught law at Valencia, but was ousted from this position in 1730 and went as royal librarian to Madrid. From 1740 he lived as a scholar in Oliva and led a Europe-wide correspondence, which was published in 25 volumes. Mayans is one of the major heads of the Spanish Enlightenment.
