Gregory III Laham

Gregory III. Laham BS ( غريغوريوس الثالث لحام, civil: Lutfi Laham; * December 15, 1933 in Darayya, Syria ) is as Patriarch of Antioch and the whole East, of Alexandria and of Jerusalem, the head of the united with the Roman Catholic Church Melkite Greek Catholic Church and the highest Catholic dignitaries in the Middle East.

Life

Gregor was born under the name Lutfi Laham. He belongs to the Order of Basilian the Most Holy Redeemer. He made his Bachelors degree in Lebanon before he went to Rome. He was ordained priest on 15 February 1959. In 1961 he received his doctorate in theology at the Pontifical Oriental Oriental Institute in Rome. He was ordained a bishop in 1981 and served as Patriarchal Vicar in Jerusalem. In 2000 he was elected Melkite Catholic Patriarch of Antioch and took Gregorios III. as its official name. The Melkites, the royalists of the rulers of Byzantium, see themselves as the early Church of the Holy Land, and as the direct spiritual descendants and heirs of the first Christian communities of Jerusalem and Galilee.

Traditionally, the Patriarch of Antioch and the Spiritual Protector of the over 900 -year-old Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, who follows the rules of the order of St. Augustine of Hippo. He is a Grand Master of the Patriarchal Order of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. In addition, the patriarch since 1990, and therefore Gregory III.
