Jordan Gregory Harbaugh ( born April 15, 1956 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA ) is a former American astronaut.

Harbaugh in 1978 received a bachelor's degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue University in 1986 and a Masters degree in Physical Science from the University of Houston -Clear Lake.

Astronauts activity

In 1978, Harbaugh as an engineer for NASA. In the Johnson Space Center supported the majority of shuttle missions STS -1 through STS -51 -L. In June 1987, he was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate.

From 1997 until his retirement from NASA in March 2001, Harbaugh worked in the project office for spacewalks.

STS -39

On April 28, 1991 Harbaugh started as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Discovery into space. STS -39 was the first non-secret shuttle mission of the U.S. Department of Defense. For this mission, only the MPEC experiment was classified as secret. Furthermore, were studied southern polar lights, conducted various experiments and exposed several small satellites.

STS -54

With the Space Shuttle Endeavour Harbaugh started as a mission specialist on 13 January 1993 on mission STS - 54th Main objectives of this mission were exposing the $ 200 million Tracking and Data Relay Satellite ( TDRS -F) and attempts to X-ray astronomy with the Diffuse X -ray Spectrometer ( DXS ).

STS -61

Harbaugh in the backup crew for the mission STS -61 was the space shuttle Endeavour. This flight, which began on 2 December 1993, was the first repair mission of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST ).

STS -71

June 27, 1995 Harbaugh flew as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Atlantis to the 100th mission of a manned spacecraft of the United States. Main tasks was the first coupling during the third flight in the Shuttle -Mir program between the Space Shuttle Atlantis and the Mir space station. Moreover, in the module Spacelab various medical experiments to study the effects of microgravity were conducted on the vascular system, bone, and the lungs of the human.

STS -82

With the space shuttle Discovery Harbaugh flew on 11 February 1997 on the second maintenance mission for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Harbaugh was involved in two of the five spacewalks (EVA), during which the telescope was repaired. In addition to a tape recorder, which was replaced with a core memory, the HST received the infrared camera and the spectroscope NICMOS STIS. For two spectrographs were expanded.
