Greigia

Habit of Greigia sphacelata.

The Greigia form a genus in the subfamily Bromelioideae within the family Bromeliaceae ( Bromeliaceae ). In this genus there are about 30 species.

The genus name honors Greigia the President of the Russian plant communities Samuel Alexeivich Greig ( 1827-1887 ).

Occurrence

The distribution of the genus Greigia lies in the Neotropics. The areas of Greigia species ranging from Mexico to Chile. Depending on the type they thrive at altitudes 0-3500 meters. They thrive mainly in moist or swampy forests.

Because of their size rarely will you find Greigia types in private collections. Botanical gardens often cultivate several ways. You need high humidity and do not tolerate frost. They are easy to propagate vegetatively via Kindel. Seed obtained rare, because they are not self-fertile.

Description

Greigia species are stemless or forming a more or less short trunk, perennial, herbaceous plants. This xerophytes grow mostly terrestrial or on rock, scarce as epiphytes. With its foothills they often form dense populations. The numerous, depending on the nature very different long leaves are thin, oblong, dense and strongly reinforced at the edge ( spiky cut ).

Sitting at the pendant, simple, aged men, head - or roller-like inflorescences with short inflorescence stem, sometimes strikingly colored bracts ( bracts ). Since the inflorescences, as an exception under the Bromeliaceae, are not formed terminally but pendant, a rose at intervals produce several inflorescences. An inflorescence contains many flowers. The threefold, radial symmetry flowers are hermaphrodite with double perianth. The three sepals are free. The three free petals are white through pink to reddish. There are two circles, each with three free stamens present. Three carpels are fused into one inferior ovary. The style ends in a three-lobed stigma.

Flowers formula:

The berries contain many seeds. The berries of Greigia sphacelata be eaten.

System

For the genus Greigia usually there is the synonym Hesperogreigia Skottsb ..

Often there is confusion with the species of the closely related genera Ochagavia and Fascicularia ( In Ochagavia the petals pink. Are ) ( In today monotypic genus Fascicularia the petals are blue to purple ).
