Greiz (district)

The district Greiz is a county in the east of the Free State of Thuringia with its county town Greiz. Regional planning Risch the circle belongs to the eastern Thuringia planning region and is a member of the planning community Ostthüringen.

Geography

Neighboring districts are in northern Saxony- Anhalt belonging castle district and the district-free city Gera, Altenburg in the northeast of the county land, east of the Saxon district Zwickau, in the south of the also -Saxon Vogtland district and west of the Saale- Orla-Kreis and the Saale- wood country circle. The south of the county is part of the Thuringian Slate Mountains, while the north to Leipzig lowlands (Saale -Elster - sandstone slab ) falls away. The most important rivers are in the east of the circle flowing Weisse Elster and its left tributary Weida, which is dammed several times to drinking water reservoirs. 213 km ² of the district is covered by forest, 13.3 km ² are water surfaces.

History

Historically, the county is part of the Vogtland and consists of four different former principalities. A district Greiz there was continuous since the founding of the state of Thuringia in 1920 (see also the district Greiz ( 1922-1952 ) ). In its present form, the county was created in 1994 by merging the counties Gera, Zeulenroda and Greiz. For Altkreis Greiz up to 31 March 1992, the city Elster mountain and the community Görschnitz and until 31 July 1994, the municipality Cunsdorf. They fell by referendum in Saxony, to which she had also heard until 1952.

Policy

District

District Administrator of the circle since its formation in 1994, Martina Schweinburg ( CDU). Previously, she was district administrator of the district Zeulenroda.

In the elections of 22 April 2012 Schweinburg was confirmed for another six years in office, after she could obtain an absolute majority in the first ballot. With a turnout of 49.9 % received 60.4 % of the valid votes cast.

Coat of arms

The Golden Lion and the Crane were derived from the coat of arms of the Princes of Reuss, who had most of the area for many centuries in their possession. Economy

Around 8,000 companies - especially in the small and medium range - are located in the district of Greiz. Important branches in the manufacturing sector are the chemical industry, especially the rubber and plastic products manufacturing, the textile industry, the food and beverage industry, timber processing and the metal processing industry. The Köstritzer black beer brewery and chemical Bad Köstritz, the Bauerfeind Group ( Zeulenroda ), the Breckle mattress factory Weida GmbH ( Weida ) and the bismuth GmbH are among the major employers in the county. An area of ​​approximately 520 km ² is agricultural land. Gross domestic product amounted to 1,864 million euros in 2007. Road

The district Greiz is from the federal motorways 4 (triangle Kirchheim / A 7 - Eisenach - Gera - Dresden - Görlitz - border crossing PL) crossed and 9 ( Munich Berlin - Leipzig - - Nuremberg). Moreover runs near the highway 72 (Hof - Chemnitz ).

Public transportation

The public transport (PT ) is provided mainly by the RVG Regional traffic Gera / Land GmbH in the northern part of the county. In the southern part of the passenger and travel company Greiz mbH ( PRG) takes the public transport service. Both companies are united under the umbrella of the service and management company Greiz (SVG GRZ ). In addition to these two public transport companies, two private companies offer public transport: bus operation Dipl. -Ing. ( FH) Günter Herzum and bus operation Hartmut Piehler. The transport company Ostthüringer travel agency and bus operation Heyne was acquired in June 2009 by the PRG Greiz.

Rail transport

Several railway lines, including the mid - Germany connection, complete the infrastructure of the circle. While the railway line Werdau - Weida - Mehltheuer is still partially traveled, the routes Neumark - Greiz and Zeulenroda unt Bf- Zeulenroda are ob Bf completely shut down.

Traffic
