Gremiale

The Gremiale is an apron in the form of a rectangular cloth which is tied with two strings around the hips. It serves to protect the liturgical vestments, especially in the anointing with the Holy oils.

It can be used on the following occasions:

  • In the anointing of the head and the hands in the ordination or consecration of the Bishop
  • Katechumenensalbung, Baptism and Confirmation
  • In the gift of the Ashes on Ash Wednesday
  • The washing of the feet in the celebration of the Last Supper
  • The rite of consecration of a new altar
  • The rite of consecration
