Greppen

Greppen is a municipality in the constituency Lucerne Land of the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland.

Geography

Greppen located on Lake Lucerne, on the eastern shore of Küssnachter arm at the foot of the Rigi. Greppen stretches from Lake Lucerne on the western slopes of the Rigi to below Rigi-Staffel ( 1,400 m above sea level. M. ) from. From the municipal area only 330 ha of land, the rest is Seeanteil. History

Greppen shared essentially the history of the neighboring village of Weggis. It belonged to the Habsburgs and fell in 1406 as part of the Bailiwick Neuhabsburg by purchase to Lucerne. In 1803 it was assigned to the district of Lucerne.

The population is traditionally Catholic. The situation looks today ( 2000) as follows: 65.97 % are Roman Catholic, 19.87 % Protestant Reformed, Orthodox 1.04% and 0.52 % Old Catholic Christians. Non-Christian minorities are 8.44% and 1.30% non-religious Muslims.

Origin and nationalities

End of 2009, of the 965 inhabitants 854 Swiss and 111 ( = 11.5% ) are foreigners. Of the resident in Greppen foreign nationals Germany is the most represented nation with 65 people or 6.7%.

Fusion project Lucerne Rigigemeinden

The three Rigigemeinden Greppen Lucerne, Weggis and Vitznau, plan -less a gradual merger, as they now have been working together in many matters. The population of Greppen found their livelihood at an early stage in various professions. Tourism

Since various projects such as the lines of the Zürich -Gotthard railway along the Rigi and the construction of a railway from Greppen smashed up the Rigi, tourism in Greppen is not as significant as in nearby communities.

Traffic

Since 1869 Greppen has a ship station of the Lake Lucerne Navigation Company ( SGV ). It lies on the course Küssnacht-Hertenstein/Weggis-Luzern.

The bus operation of the SGV from Küssnacht direction Weggis ( - Gersau Fountain ) was added in 1932.
