Grésy-sur-Aix

Grésy -sur -Aix is a town in the French department of Savoie in the Rhone -Alpes. It is the capital of the Canton of Aix -les- Bains- North Grésy in the arrondissement of Chambery.

Geography

Grésy -sur -Aix is located at 350 m above sea level. M., near Aix -les- Bains, about 18 kilometers north of the town of Chambery (air line). The village is located in the foothills of the Alps, on a plateau increased slightly south of the Valley of Sierre, near the Lac du Bourget, between the Montagne de la Biolle in the northwest and the Mont Revard ( massif of the Wallows ) in the southeast.

History

The territory of Grésy -sur -Aix was settled very early. It traces of the Bronze Age, wall foundations from the Roman period and a burial ground were discovered from the time of Burgundy. The first documentary mention of the place was in the 11th century under the name de Grasiaco and de Graisieu. Later, the names Gresieu (1201 ) published, Graysiacum ( 1215), de Gresiaco, de Greysiaco ( 1289 ), Gressie ( 1312), Greysie ( 1316 ), Greysi en Genevois ( 1555) and Grésy -en- Genevois. The name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Gratius and means something like estate of Gratius ( Gratiacum ).

In the Middle Ages Grésy formed its own rule under the family Grésy, who came out of the house Faucigny. In the 14th century, these reign gained an important position in the border area of the counties of the Genevois and of Savoy, before they finally came under the suzerainty of Savoy in 1401. In 1793 the Municipality of Grésy -en- Genevois in Grésy -sur -Aix has been renamed.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint -Jean -Baptiste was built in the 19th century in the Gothic Revival style. In the hamlet Droise is a chapel, which also dates from the 19th century. From the former Château de Grésy a tower from the 12th century has survived. In the area of the village and on the surrounding slopes are numerous castles and manor houses, including the Château de Mouxy ( from the 15th century, remodeled in the 18th century), the Château de Loche ( from the 15th to the 17th centuries, with rich interiors and a chapel ) in a beautiful park, the Château du Fontany and the Château de Varax.

Population

With 4070 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Grésy -sur -Aix is one of the medium-sized towns in the Savoie département. After the population was declining in the first half of the 20th century, a significant population increase has been recorded since the early 1970s thanks to the attractive residential area again. Since then, the population has nearly tripled. The settlement area of Grésy -sur -Aix has grown together seamlessly today with that of Aix -les- Bains.
