Males 55-62 cm Bitches 53-60 cm

The Griffon Nivernais is recognized by the FCI French breed (FCI Group 6, Section 1.1, Standard No. 17).

Origin and History

Model for the reconstruction breeding of Griffon Nivernais were probably the mighty wolf hunter, the famous "gray dog " of Saint Louis ( 1214-1270 ), who came with the crusaders from the Balkans, which were the Canes Segusii ( Celts Bracken ) related dogs in which also Arabian Greyhound blood flowed. The actual Griffon Nivernais emerged after the French Revolution by crossing the Griffon Vendéens in other existing hound breeds. Her purpose was to hunt wolves, and later the hunting of ungulates. In 1925, some hunters came together to save the Griffon Nivernais from extinction. It created two sizes, the smaller of the disappeared again soon.

Description

The modern Griffon Nivernais has a height at the withers by up to 55 to 60 cm, or about 20 cm less than its model. His hair is long, shaggy, messed up, quite strong, always gewolkt in dark, which means that the fur tips are always darker than the skin approach ( sooty ). The ears are pendulous, soft, rather thin, of medium width, pretty hairy.

Use

The Griffon Nivernais is a sometimes overzealous hunting dog that works but calm and focused. In France, it is highly valued as wild boar hunters. He hunts both in the pack as well as alone.
