Grigorovich I-1

The Grigorovich I-1 (Russian Григорович И -1) was a Soviet fighter aircraft. It was developed in 1921 by Dmitri Pavlovich Grigorovich, simultaneously with the Polikarpov I-1. Both machines had the same tender as the basis.

It is a single-seat biplane of wood construction with canvas covering. Only the engine cowling was made of aluminum and the front fuselage had a Sperrholzbeplankung. As a drive manufactured under license of American Liberty L- 12 engine was used, the radiator was placed between the main landing gear struts. Finally, in the autumn of 1923 it came to the construction of the machine, which launched its first flight in early 1924.

The machine met the expectations in terms of speed and maneuverability. However, the stability and climb performance proved defects point. The engine overheated again and again. Thus, there was no mass production and the findings were incorporated into the revised version Grigorovich I-2.
