Grigory Gamarnik

Grigori Alexandrovich Gamarnik (Russian Григорий Александрович Гамарник; born April 22, 1929 in Kirovohrad ) is a former Soviet wrestler. He was world champion in 1955 in the Greco-Roman wrestling in lightweight.

Sports career

Gamarnik was a member of the Red Army and was a member of the Sports Club of the Army in Kiev. Grigori wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style, and made in 1951 for the attention, when he finished 2nd in the Soviet championships in the lightweight behind the Moscow Vladimir Yegorov and before Schazam Safin. Qualifying for the 1952 Olympic Games and the World Cup in 1953 managed not yet Grigori. In 1955 he was employed at the World Championships in Karlsruhe lightweight. Although a defeat against the Bulgarians Dimitar Stoyanov had to put there in the second round, he was able to convince and win with five wins in its remaining fighting the world champion title.

In the Olympic qualification for 1956 Grigori failed to Vladimir Rosin. For this reason he could until 1958, again take part in an international championship, the World Championships in Budapest. There he wrestled up a weight class higher in the welterweight division. He again won five fights, but lost the final to the Turks Kâzım Ayvaz and therefore had to settle for the runners-up title.

1960 Grigori managed the leap to Olympics. In the meantime, however, he was not as strong as in previous years, and came to Rome welterweight just to 5th place - after a draw against Mithat Bayrak from Turkey, who won the gold medal, and a defeat against Stevan Horvat from Yugoslavia.

After the end of his athletic career Grigori Gamarnik worked as a wrestler coach in the Red Army.
