Grigory Novak

Grigori Irmowitsch Nowak (Russian Григорий Ирмович Новак; born March 5, 1919 in Chernobyl, Ukraine; † 10 July 1980) was a Soviet weightlifter.

Career

Grigori Nowak was born in a small Ukrainian town and started as a child in gymnastics and sports acrobatics. To obtain the requisite power, he began weightlifting and stuck with it. He was 1940-1952 one of the best weightlifters in the world. In total, he scored in his career, 71 world records and 111 Soviet records.

After the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, where he won the silver medal in the medium heavyweight, he ended his weightlifting career and became a professional artist. Together with his sons he made a breathtaking power number with which he performed for years in circuses and variety shows.

Grigori Nowak was small and stocky, which came to him mainly for his achievements in beidarmigen Press stead. A picture of the award ceremony of the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki shows him together with Norbert Schemansky, the gold medal winner. He was a full head shorter than Schemansky.
