Grimoald of Bavaria

Grimoald of Bavaria († 728 ) was a son of the Bavarian Duke Theodosius II and grandson of Agilolf of Bavaria from the family of Agilolfinger. Grimoald was in the years 702-723 Duke of the Bavarians in part - tribal duchy of Bavaria and Freising

Theodosius II appointed him along with his brothers Theudebald, Theudebert and Tassilo II to co-regent. After the death of his father in 718, and his brothers Theudebald and Tassilo II, he ruled as co-regent with his brother Theudebert. He also married his deceased brother Theudebald the widow, probably to secure his position of power. However, this marriage brought him into conflict with the missionary Korbinian, who had to flee the marriage was illegal and then explained to the Tyrol.

When finally his brother Theudebert year 724 died, he tried to power not to usurp and his nephew Hugbert to displace from the rule. Hugbert then fled into the Frankish Empire and asked the powerful House Meier of the Frankish king Charles Martel for help. Charles Martel moved in the following year ( 725 ) against the Bavarian dukedom before and defeated Grimoald in the Battle of the Danube. Grimoald himself was assassinated on the run.
