Griseofulvin ( lat.Griseofulvinum ), is a naturally occurring chemical compound from the group of mycotoxins, which is used as orally active drug. The benzofuran derivative and mycotoxin secreted by Penicillium griseofulvum and has an antibiotic effect on dermatophytes ( filamentous fungi ). The therapeutic antifungal agent for the treatment of skin infections and fungi is used. Against other fungi such as molds, however, it is ineffective.
Overdosed griseofulvin can lead to sleep disturbances, dizziness, and headache. Also rheumatic side effects have been observed.
Griseofulvin is an anti-proliferative effect on various cancer cells and inhibits tumor growth in athymic mice. In vitro, the induction of apoptosis observed in cancer cells, while normal cells are not affected.
