Groat (coin)

Groat ( " Penny" ) is the name for the silver four - pence piece, which was coined in the United Kingdom as current coin until 1855; it is included as the largest coin in the so-called Maundy set up in our time. The first Groats were minted in 1279 during the reign of Edward I.

A similar coin was the North German Groten, who was initially 4 ( meißnische ) pennies and later 5 Schwaren.
