History

In Grob's analysis in a newspaper column, he cited the opening sting - opening, a name that enjoys still single use. Other older references used the name Ahlhausen - opening, after the Berlin players Carl Ahlhausen (1835-1892), one of the first 1 g4 player. Savielly Tartakower played the train sometimes in simultaneous exhibitions and called him Genoa or San Pier d' Arena - opening, according to the city and the suburb of Genoa where he played him the first time. In Czechoslovakia, the first train g2 - g4 opening Fricks was called, and in other parts of the world it is called Hummingbird opening.

Grob's attack is generally considered inferior and is not usually played at serious events, although the International Master Michael Basman and the Greek grandmaster Spyridon Skembris the train play occasionally. The train has, however, a certain element of surprise and the average player usually does not know how to refute him and runs a higher risk arrogant aufzuspielen and to make mistakes. Moreover, the exploration and research of the theory of this train break through the repertoire of an experienced opponent.

Opening ideas

Carefree game of black can lead to dangerous situations. Many of these Abspiele based on the black 1 ... d7 -d5 response that attacks the farmers with the women runners. After 2 Lf1 - g2 Lc8xg4? White has after 3 c2 - c4 pressure game on the diagonal h1 - a8, combined with the possibility Dd1 -b3, after which White has the initiative and will regain his pawn ( or b7 d5). However, it gets white often lagging behind, which is why, for example, Basman farmers usually covered with 2 h2 - h3.

Due to the irregular pawn structure, the White has produced by drawing g2 - g4 and c2 - c4 at such an early point in time, any kind of white castling results in a very sharp game.

Against all the intricacies of covering d5 2 ... c7 - c6 is directed instead of direct second ... Lc8xg4.

With respect to the weakened area h4 Andrew David Martin, recommends 1 ... e7 - e5 2 h2 h3 instant maneuvers Ng8 E7 G6. After 2 Lf1 - g2 he opens with ... h7 - h5 2nd the h-file. To avoid this, propagated Henry Grob, the namesake of the opening, 2 d2 -d3 in order to advance to second ... h7 - h5 with the farmer to g5 can.

Romford counter-gambit

An interesting answer is the aggressive black Romford counter-gambit, which was discovered in 1980 by English players Nick Pelling: 1 g2 - g4 d7 -d5 2 - g2 Lf1 Lc8xg4 3 c2 - c4 d5 -d4? 4 Lg2xb7 Sb8 - d7 5 Lb7xa8 Dd8xa8 6 f2 -f3 d4 -d3! . Black has the exchange sacrifice ( tower against runners ) free piece play and development lead. With a structure as e7 - e6, Ng8 - f6, Nd7 - e5, Bf8 - c5 and 0-0 he has a clear strategic development plan, possibly associated with a kingside attack, while white is stuck paralyzed on the home row.

Michael Basman also proposed a variation of Gambit after 3 ... d5xc4.
