Grobiņa

Grobiņa ( German Grobin ) is a small town in the west of Latvia; 10 kilometers from Liepaja.

History

In the early Middle Ages it was a Scandinavian settlement, which appears in the Annals with the name Seeburg. Excavations have discovered three cemeteries with cremation burials, weapons and jewelry from the Scandinavian type from the Vendel. The findings from two cemeteries are Gotland, is associated with the Mälardalen in central Sweden from the third burial ground. They date from the period 600-850 AD About the Liepaja lake ( Liepaja ezers ) was the port for merchant ships reached. Around 800, the settlement was captured by the cures. In the Vita sancti Ansgari the bishop says Rimbert of these battles.

1269 a brick castle of the Teutonic Order was established, whose ruins can be visited today. The Order pledged during the Livonian War the Commandery Grobin to the Duke of Prussia, in order to obtain help against the attacks of Ivan IV the Terrible. 1560 a school was established. 1659, the area was devastated by the Swedes in 1710 and raged a plague epidemic.
