Groissiat

Groissiat is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Groissiat is located at 550 m above sea level. M., about six kilometers southwest of the city Oyonnax (air line). The village is located in the northern Bugey, a slight increase on the western edge of the wide Talniederung In the Jura, at the western foot of the Grande Côte.

The area of ​​6.32 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the southern French Jura. History

Is first mentioned Groissiat in 1084 under the name Grossiacum. Over time, the spelling on Groisya, Gruisia ( 1394) and Groyssiacus changed ( 1483 ) to Groissiaz ( 1593). The name goes back to the Gallo-Roman family names Grossius and means something like estate of Grossius.
