The Gronau railway station ( Westphalia ) is a railway station in Wetteringen town of Gronau.

It is located at the two railway lines Münster- Enschede and Dortmund- Enschede. In addition to this station there was in the area of the present town of Gronau six other stations, one of which still operates in the Epe district today.

History

Was opened by the then Station in September 1875 as a joint station of Dortmund -Gronau - Enschede Railway Company and the Münster- Enschede Railway Company. However, the latter took over financially to the project of railway construction which was then continued by the Royal Westphalian Railway Company. The next two of Münster and Dortmund routes unite here to share continuation in the Dutch Enschede.

On 18 July 1903, the Nederlandsch - Westfaalsche Stoomtrein - Maatschappij opened a steam tram line from Oldenzaal about Losser to Gronau. This railway was for customs clearance is a train station in Glane on the Dutch side of the border and its own railway station " Gronau Dutch train" just before the actual Gronau railway station.

Almost five years later Gronau also received a railroad connection to Bad Bentheim by Bentheim railroad. Their route ran from Gronau railway station, near the German -Dutch border to the north. On today's Gronau city area was followed with the opening of this route two more stations, the station building association in the city itself and the station Driland the " triangle " Westphalia / Lower Saxony / Netherlands.

Even with the opening of the railway line Ochtrup - Rheine in 1905, enlarged the volume of traffic in Gronau railway station because the trains of Ochtrup were bound to Gronau. In the years 1914/1915, the station was therefore completely rebuilt and given new interlocking technology and a new reception building, which is present to this day.

In the period before the Second World War, the company was greatly reduced or adjusted to many Dutch interurban trams, as well as on the distance between Oldenzaal and Gronau in 1936, which two years later was canceled by Losser to the German border. The rest of the line was closed and demolished in World War II. A similar fate befell the way to Bad Bentheim a few years later: Passenger between Guild Hall and Gronau was the end of May 1965 decommissioned ( the remaining portion nine years later ), the route in 1981 finally shut down and dismantled between Gronau and Achterberg.

Also in 1981, also the passenger traffic on the now belonging to the DB route Gronau - Enschede has been set. The track was then closed down June 15, 1985. It was not until in 2001 a resumption of the cross-border movement of persons.

Since 2008, signals and points at the station by the electronic interlocking ( CBI ) be remotely controlled in Coesfeld, previously ( from 1953 still ) there were three mechanical interlockings. By following the CBI also a further simplification of the tracks was accompanied after some tracks had been decommissioned in the 1980s.

Today's state

Today, there are three platform tracks and on the Enschede side three sidings.

The station will alternately from the line RB 51 (Dortmund - Enschede) and the line RB 64 ( Münster- Enschede) served that operate each hourly and complement on the way to Enschede during the day to a half hour. The station building is now a Customer / web site of a private travel agencies, after the previously circulating there Prignitzer Eisenbahn GmbH has made 2011 the operation back to the DB, a bike station with kiosk and tourism agency and services of DB Regio NRW, the Federal Police and of Westfalenbus.

The directly east adjoining the station level crossing of the railway station road was abandoned in 2009 and replaced by an underpass of the toll road west of the station. A new underpass for pedestrians and cyclists was also born in 2009 east of the platforms, where the island platform with tracks 1 and 2, an elevator is now easily accessed by wheelchair. The outer platform with track 3 is also barrier-free accessible through the cotton road.
