The Groningen Railway Station is the largest train station in the Dutch city of Groningen and the province of the same name. The station was used daily by about 32,500 people in 2006. He is a central hub in urban public transport. At the station, at national regional and long-distance trains as well as the cross-border Stoptrein to Leer. The station is located on the southern side of the city center of Groningen.

History

The current station is the third station building. The station was opened on 1 June 1866, the section from Groningen to Leeuwarden the railway Harlingen Nieuwe Schans. The next link the route to Winschoten 1868 - Nieuwe Schans (now Bad Nieuweschans ) put into operation. The connection to Meppel followed in 1870. A proper station building was completed in 1872. In 1884 the line was opened to Delfzijl. Its present appearance was the station 1896. 1999 the station building was completely renovated and modernized.
