Grottazzolina

Grottazzolina (La Grotta in the local dialect ) is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 3333 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Fermo in the Marche. The community is located about 10.5 kilometers southwest of Fermo, about 24 km south-southeast of Macerata and about 28 kilometers north of Ascoli Piceno. North of Grottazzolina flows the Tenna.

History

As a fief the community is detectable after Christ since the 8th century. They belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of Farfa in the church today Fara Sabina Lazio. In the meantime, she then passed as a dependent territory of the city of Fermo. Under Pope Innocent III. became the church its present name after the Earl Azzolino.

The former railway station on the narrow gauge railway (950 mm) from Porto San Giorgio after Amandola was decommissioned in 1956.
