Grotte aux Fées (Switzerland)

The Grotte aux fées is a cave near Saint- Maurice in the canton Valais. It is developed for tourists and can be visited in the upgraded parts without accompaniment.

History

In 1831, the first time a distance of 600 meters was reached from the entrance. 1863, it was then set to the public. Two years later the cave, to make them better known, renamed from its original name " Trou aux Fayes " in the present name " Grotte aux fées " ( Fairy Grotto ). In that time the Romantic period in Europe the success was then no longer a coincidence, because by visiting a cave all dreams should meet. In 1925, then you first came to the summit of the waterfall at the end of the tourist gallery and discovered the higher power.

From the Swiss army was then later used as a connecting tunnels of the two fortresses Cindey and Scex. A tap from the main course, the dead gallery, has been extended artificially.
