Gruia, Mehedinți

Gruia is a municipality in the district of Mehedinţi in southwestern Romania.

Geographical location

The municipality extends to the south of the circle, on the left bank of the Danube, south of Mehedinţi Mountains. On the opposite side there is the Serbian community Radujevac. Located on the National Road (drum National) DN 56C, the place Gruia is enclosed on the east by vast wheat fields of the Lesser Wallachia.

History

Nearby Gruias - called by the locals La Cariera - there are several sites of Roman relics that date back to the Roman settlements in the former province of Dacia. However, the history of settlement in the region dates back more. In the area of the place Izvoarele finds were what point in the Bronze Age, made ​​.

With the EU accession of Romania 2007 Gruia became a frontier town of the European Union and since then has been under strict surveillance by customs. Nevertheless, the smuggling of illegal goods from Serbia across the Danube is widespread.

Economy

Gruia thrives on trade and shipping on the Danube. Another part of the population is engaged in agriculture.

Investors are attracted mainly by inland waterways and to the community to align the Western European standard in the future. Construction projects include, for example, the expansion of water supply and modernization of the sewage system.

Tourism is well developed and is limited to the old Danube harbor, the archaeological sites, as well as the board SC COMEXIM.

Attractions

  • The Romanian Orthodox Church Adormirea Maicii Domnului, built 1834-1837 in Gruia, is a listed building.
