Grundy County (Illinois)

The Grundy County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 50 063 inhabitants and a population density of 46 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Morris.

The Grundy County is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.

Geography

The County is located in the central northeastern Illinois in the southwest suburban area of Chicago. It has an area of 1115 km ², of which 27 km ² water surface are.

To the east of Grundy County, Kankakee River and the Des Plaines River flow together to the Illinois River, which flows in an east-west direction of the County.

History

The first white settlement began around 1800. The first confirmed by documents settlers was William Marquis, who arrived in 1828 in a covered wagon. The formation of settlements began around 1830. Five years later, the first public land sales began. On February 17, 1841, the Grundy County was formed from parts of La Salle County. It was named for Felix Grundy, a lawyer, politician, Senator and Minister of Justice.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Grundy County 50 063 people in 17,961 households. The population density was 46 people per square kilometer. In the 17,961 households lived statistically 2.71 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 96.2 percent white, 1.6 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.8 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 8.4 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

26.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 61.9 percent were between 18 and 64 and 11.3 percent were 65 years or older. 50.2 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 64,297. The per capita income was $ 27,895. 6.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
