History and Origin of the name

The Green Lake owes its existence to the fact that in the 1930s was a small quarry up there. Were obtained slaty rock for road construction and quarry stones for building. The reduction then had to be discontinued due to strong inflow of groundwater.

In 2003, the bottom of the lake and the shore area by the home club Buer (district of Melle ) were sludged consuming.

The name Green Lake is derived from the " turquoise - green" staining of its water, which is justified by the dissolved minerals in this, especially the relatively high proportion of calcium carbonate; the reason for this, in turn, is the fact that the rock of the Wiehengebirge mainly consists of limestone.

Hydrology

From an average rainfall of 800 mm / year in its catchment area basis, the lake has an annual inflow of about 95,000 m³ of Bach -described and 800 m³ of direct entry through precipitation on the lake surface. Accordingly, the seawater is around 100 times a year, or in other words, changed every 3 to 4 days.
