Grünewald (Luxembourg)

The Green Forest ( Lux: Gréngewald ) is the largest contiguous forest in Luxembourg and mostly state-owned.

The Green Forest, where the white and the black Ernz spring, is located in the northeast of the city of Luxembourg. On the western edge of the forest at Walferdange are the Rasch fountain, an underground aqueduct system from Roman times.

In the 19th century the Grünewald was 2623 hectares, today is that there 2,500 hectares in 1845, the Dutch King - Grand Duke William II, the state bought 669 acres of forest. The grand ducal family still owns (2007) about 850 acres of the Green Forest.
