Gryazi

Grjasi (Russian Грязи ) is a town with 46 807 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) and the center of the Rajons same name in the Lipetsk Oblast in Russia. It lies on the River Matyra, a tributary of the Voronezh, about 30 km south-east of the regional center of Lipetsk.

History

Though founded in the city is 1868, when the railway line from Moscow to Voronezh and laid in the present city of a railway station was built. The city's name, which literally means " sludge " means - perhaps so was the predominant in this region chernozem soil type meant - but existed earlier and was originally a village in the vicinity.

Already in 1869 were built from here more railway lines to Yelets and Borisoglebsk so that Grjasi became a railway junction. Initially, the site was one just over 1000 inhabitants, in the late 1930s, there were already nearly 26,000. At the same time, namely in 1938, Grjasi received the city status.

Economy and Transport

Grjasi is now considered an industrial suburb of Lipetsk, among other things, with a hydraulic and an agricultural machinery factory and a sugar factory and other food establishments.

As a transportation hub Grjasi has three stations and a bus station. About Lipetsk is access to the highway M4, 100 km east also is the city of Tambov, is also connected to the Grjasi by a direct road.
